Apple injects $5 million into Imagination, licensee status confirmed
LONDON Apple Inc. has subscribed to 8.2 million new shares in Imagination Technologies Group plc (Kings Langley, England) and thereby has taken a 3.6 percent stake in the company, the graphics intellectual property licensor said Thursday (Dec. 18).
Apple is buying the shares at 39 pence each and thereby injecting £3.198 million (about $5 million) in to the company, which published some weak financial results on Dec. 11.
In a statement Imagination confirmed that Apple is a licensee of Imagination's technology. This was something proposed by this website in September in the story 'Has Imagination followed ARM's lead with Apple license?'. At that time Imagination said it had concluded a multi-year, multi-use license agreement with an international electronics systems company for its PowerVR graphics core. This is after it had already succeeded in getting its PowerVR MBX core designed into the Apple iPhone.
